Many people are injured every year from slipping on stairs and some may even die from nasty falls. There are several ways to reduce the risk of falls, including being careful, cleaning stairs of any debris or junk that may accumulate, and of course by adding non slip stair treads.
Non slip stair treads can also be attractive, adding to or complementing your decor, helping protect your stairs from ordinary wear and tear as well as accidental chipping or scraping, but their primary purpose is safety; preventing slips which can leads to falls, injuries, and worse.
So, what exactly are stair treads? Very simply they are something you place on stairs in order to help prevent people from slipping.
There are many different varieties, including carpet stair treads, which
may be an entire roll of carpet covering (usually) just the middle part of
the stairs or sometimes discrete rugs for each stair. They sometimes have
rubber backing or similar and just sit on each stair or they may be
physically attached, perhaps glued or tacked. Individual braided stair treads
are very popular and attractive.
Rubber stair treads are also very common. The family summer house has
these attached to the cellar stairs with carpet tacks. The stairs were
slippery 30 years ago, and my father almost had a nasty fall once, but the
stair treads have helped prevent anyone from falling for literally decades
since. Similar ones can be found made of vinyl or aluminum as well.
Of course simply using non slip tape is another option. This tape has a gritty non-slip surface, and is popular for stairs as well as truck and motor home running boards, folding ladders, boat decks, and much more.
Non slip stair treads are often just common sense in many areas. Some are appropriate for indoor use, some for outdoor use, and some for both. There are even heated ones available that melt any ice or snow on them!
You can find non slip stair treads in many places, including your local hardware store and department stores like Target, K-mart, Walmart, and more. You will usually find a better selection and sometimes better prices online. For example, Amazon has a big selection and excellent prices.
