Did you know that more people slip in the bathtub and drown every year than are killed by sharks? And amazing, yet somewhat foolish statistic, as both numbers are quite low.
You probably don't need to worry about getting eaten by sharks if you follow a few precautions, and even if you don't you'll probably be fine.
And if you take reasonable precautions in the tub, you should have little to worry about. A non slip bathmat is simply something I think every bathtub should have. Hey, baths get very slippery! You should also always be careful getting in and out. A tub hand rail also makes sense. They are not just for older people, but wonderful to help steady you after you've been relaxing in a steaming hot tub for a while.
There are all types of non slip bathmats available. There are decorative ones for kids like Sponge Bob and Thomas the Train ones. There are fancy ones for adults. I usually go for a straightforward basic one.
As an example, the Ginsey Rubbermaid Rubber Bath Mat
is a basic non slip bathmat. It's
textured for safety and has skid resistant suction cups to anchor it to the
bathtub surface, a standard white color, and 17 by 36 inches. This is the
extra large size. It also comes in large and medium, and blue as well as
white.
I strongly recommend you hang up your bathmat between uses. Otherwise with the moisture that's trapped underneath, it and the bathtub surface may grow mold. Some mats advertise themselves as machine washable, and a quick run through the clothes washer is a good idea (although we almost never seem to do it).
I don't worry about slipping in the tub, banging my head, and drowning, but it happens. In fact I don't worry about my slipping in the tub at all or my loved ones slipping either. I simply take reasonable precautions, like being careful and using a non slip bathmap.
As a possible alternative, there are also non slip coating available for bathtubs, for example one I saw recently at my local hardware store.
