Non Slip Matting

A non slip mat usually refers to a small piece of non slip material, for example placed on a dashboard of a car to keep small object from falling or placed in front of or in a bath tub or shower.

In contrast, non slip matting is generally used to refer to larger pieces of material, sometimes available in industrial sized rolls or perhaps sectional pieces that snap or otherwise connect together.

As an example, I have some rubber matting in my basement. I'm not sure what its original use was, but it's black, comes in approximately one meter square pieces, and the edges connect like a jig saw puzzle so that it can cover a large continuous area. I use it in an area in the basement both for its anti slip as well to protect objects from breakage that might otherwise fall on the concrete floor.

Non slip matting comes in several varieties and styles. Some of the most common types are listed below.

One type of non slip matting consists of connectable modular pieces of usually thick and black shock absorbent rubber, as I mention I have above in my basement. This is commonly used in commercial gyms and health clubs in the free weights area as well as many other places. Yes, sometimes you can find it in different colors as well.

There are many manufacturers of this type of matting, and some types are available with different non slip surfaces, for example textured vinyl which has good slip resistance, polyurethane grit material, which has better slip resistance, and carbide grit material, which has the best slip resistance. These may or may not have built in holes to allow liquids to drain through quickly so the top surface stays dry.

Another type are non slip drainage mats, for example Wearwell brand drainage mats. These are black rubber mats covered with drainage holes and ideal for wet or moderately greasy areas, as well as dry areas. The Wearwell come in 2' by 3', 3' by 3', and 3' by 5' sizes and are 1/2" thick.
