What most people mean by Yoga is the practice of physical poses associated with Yoga, which mean "union" in Sanskrit. Yoga originated over 5000 years ago in India and is popular today in the Western world as a form of physical and mental exercise.
There are different types of Yoga which vary quite a bit in how physical or meditative they are.
Yoga is often practiced in a Yoga studio with others, and a Yoga mat is commonly placed on the floor and Yoga poses or exercises are performed on the mat. The mat serves several purposes including cushioning from the floor. Most mats roll up and can be easily transported, and are available in different sizes and thicknesses.
Some Yoga mats are described as non slip yoga maps but all yoga mats should possess non slip qualities.
One example is the YogaAccessories 1/4 inch Extra Thick Deluxe Yoga Mat
which has a textured non slip surface and is a full 1/4" thick, unlike many
supposed 1/4" Yoga mats that are actually slightly less. It comes in a
seeming infinite array of colors (actually 20), an extra long 74' inches by
24' inches wide, and has a limited lifetime warranty.
The Manduka eKO 71-Inch 5mm Eco-Friendly Yoga Mat
is another option. It is made from natural tree rubber not from the Amazon
and claims to be the most durable and "eco-friendly mat on the market." It
contains no Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) or toxic plasticizers and is scent free
after the initial break-in period (all natural rubber mats have an initial
odor that fades). It's 71 inches long and 26 inches wide and a bit less than
1/4 inch thick at 5mm.
Another is the Non Slip Comfortable Set Yoga Mat
which also comes with two Yoga blocks and a Yoga strap. It's a very thin and
light mat and one side is much stickier than the other and designed to be
placed towards the floor.
Non slip Yoga mats are widely available including online. Remember that most are non slip, whether they mention it in their name or not, and one side may be stickier and designed to go onto the floor. Many Yoga studios have mats you can use before you buy one and people do have individual preferences so try a number of different mats before buying of you can.
